3. I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from my enemies.4. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid. 5. The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me.Psalm 18:3-5. The psalmist has declared the Lord to be his rock, a firm foundation, unlike sinking sand. The Lord is his high tower and fortress, a place of safety. The Lord is his strength, so much more powerful than men. The Lord is a shield in close combat with the enemy. The Lord is the strength of his salvation, spiritual and physical. The psalmist received help from the Lord and put as much effort into thanking as he did in asking. He was surrounded by enemies, Saul, and the ungodly pagans, whom Israel failed to remove from the land. The psalmist sings that he was surrounded by hell, this word is Sheol, translated, as a place of death, or the grave. Yet the psalmist speaks of God hearing from His Temple in heaven. The psalmist cried to the Lord in heaven and was heard, and the answer came that the Lord was set into action to defend and deliver him. The Lord God Jesus the Christ, creator of all things, is not looking at wealth, power, and age. He looks at the heart. And all who reverence Him and trust in Him. Will be saved, delivered, protected, and rewarded, just like the psalmist. Amen.
