1. And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury.
2. And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites.
3. And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all:
Luke 21:1-3.
We have here a widow's sacrificial offering. Jesus has taken notice of all the rich making a display of their gift.
Jesus sees the widow putting in two mites, this word in Greek is lepton, meaning, a tiny thing, a crumb, it was worth 1% of a day's wages.
The widow could have kept one coin but she gave all she possessed.
Jesus is aware of how much we give. Yet more important is He knows how we give what motivates the giving.
The rich gave out of abundance. The widow gave all she had.
The rich did not suffer loss in their giving. The widow now had placed in God's hand her very life. Trusting God to provide for her.
Here Jesus tells the disciples that she put in more than a rich man, no she put in more than all the rich men had given.
For God will truly reward those who put their very lives in His hands.
And as God cares for the living of a person on this earth. How much more do those who trust their eternal soul to Christ, who gave His life, to redeem all from destruction? Amen.
