19. It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.
20. And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God?
21. It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.
Luke 13:19-21.
Jesus, in these two parables, warns of the corruption entering into the church. A typical mustard plant is a small bush. This plant is unnaturally large. Birds lodging in the branches refers to corruption and evil doctrines, which take root in churches who engage in those things forbidden in God's word.
The leaven in three measures of meal is again an unnatural amount enough to feed a hundred men. Leaven is a picture of sin in God's word. There is no large or small sin to God. All sin separates God from His creations. It is extremely offensive to Him. Sin like leaven left to itself will infest all it touches.
Remember, this is Jesus warning you, look around at churches that allow what God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for. Jesus came to give us victory over sin. Only a dedicated watchful eye will keep God's word as the rule to live by. The tree is the growth of the kingdom in great power. The leaven is the corruption that silently creaps in separating by sin, God from His people. Amen.
