41. And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.
42. And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.
Luke 9:41-42.
A father asked Jesus's disciples to cast out a demon, and they could not. The father now comes to Jesus.
Jesus is disappointed, having given the disciples authority to preach, cast out devils, and heal.
Jesus tells the father to bring his son.
As the boy is coming, the demon throws him down with a knockout punch.
To cast despair on the father and the disciples.
This last blow Spurgeon said is as if Satan tells those just coming to Jesus.
You are not of the elect. You are too big a sinner. It is too late for you. This won't work for you. Stop trying, give up.
Jesus is not intimidated by the last display of demonic power, and instantly heals the boy, returning him to his father.
What was too hard for the disciples, was not for Jesus. The Son of the Living God has authority over all He created.
We, without Jesus, are frail and helpless. Amen.
