5. How long, LORD? wilt thou be angry for ever? shall thy jealousy burn like fire?
6. Pour out thy wrath upon the heathen that have not known thee, and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon thy name.
Psalm 79:5-6
The psalmist sings of the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple of God. The psalmist is amazed that an army could come into Israel and defile the temple and leave the servants of God as food for the birds with none to bury them.
The psalmist asks how long?
Will God's anger continue.
Jeremiah 10 speaks of the Lord, slinging out the people of Jerusalem because they chose vain idols to worship.
Now, the psalmist asks for God's help. He addresses God as the God of salvation.
He asks God not to remember the iniquities of His people, to extend His mercy, for the people have been brought very low.
Today, God has not changed. He is merciful to sinners through Christ the Son. We need just to ask.
God's mercy can not be measured it can not be bought or bargained for, it can only be received through Jesus Christ, who paid our debt for sin.
Many delay in asking for Jesus's mercy, as in Jerusalem when the warnings became fact, and how many wished they had listened and been obedient.
Christ has redeemed us and taken away our punishment and given us eternal life in place of destruction. Heed the warning in thbye Gospel, the good news of Jesus the Son of God. Amen.
