20. And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.
21. And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away.
22. And Jesus answering saith unto them, have faith in God.
Mark 11:20-22.
The previous day, Jesus saw a fig tree with leaves on it. The fig forms before the leaves, so Jesus believed He would receive a fig. But the tree had no figs, and Jesus says no man will eat fruit from you again. Now, the disciples are amazed at how quickly the tree was destroyed.
This is the only destructive miracle in Christ's ministry.
The lesson is that we are the fig tree. In our relationship with God, when we proclaim the fruit we are supplying to others, yet we are barren.
Such will be the end of all who proclaim Christ yet still live unchanged lives. The new birth provided a new start, and old ways are behind. New life now has different thoughts and actions and will yield fruit to God's kingdom. Christ said the tree that does not yield fruit will be cast into the fire.
Everything done for Christ will line up with His word. There are no shortcuts, and half measures will not be rewarded.
Jesus used the fig tree as a warning. The Lord of all creation can not be deceived. We must walk in His steps. Amen.
