15. And hecharged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.16. And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread.Mark 8:15-15. Jesus, before this verse, has fed 4000 with seven loaves and a few small fish. And with His disciples in a ship traveled to Dalmanutha. Here, the Pharisees ask for a sign from heaven, like Elijah's fire from heaven. Christ says no sign from heaven would be given. Christ's miracles displayed the mercy from God. The hard hearted, unbelieving people seeing a great sign would still not believe. Christ returns to the ship they leave. And He says to them beware of the leaven of the Pharisees. The disciples think it is because they only have a loaf of bread. Christ reminds them where they had just come from and how many baskets of leftovers they collected. The leaven is comparable to sin or false doctrine. Leaven or yeast, no matter how small, the amount will leaven all the dough. Sin or false doctrine will spread into the soul doing great harm. We must be constantly aware of how a little bad can corrupt a large amount of good. Amen.
