7. Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more?
8. Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?9. Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah.
Psalm 77:7-9.
The psalmist's troubled heart asks, searching questions. Observe how he destroys one question with another.
We have all been in situations where we have felt abandoned by God. These six questions strike at the very heart of unbelief.
Could the Lord dying in your place cast you off? Beaten and humiliated in your place, would He refuse you grace? Christ's mercy at the Cross without measure. How could it run out for you? Christ, the promise keeper. Would He lie and fail to keep His promises to you? Christ, who knows every star He created by name. Could He possibly forget about you? In a world of evil, how could any survive without God's tender mercies.
This the psalmist asks us to contemplate, in whatever situation we find ourselves. God is near, just a prayer away. He who gave His life is on our side calling us near. If there is fault, it is not with Christ. It is with us. Amen.
