9. And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.
10. But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.
11. And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,
12. Saying, These last have wrought, but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.
Matthew 20:9-12.
This parable Jesus teaches of grace and rewards.
The workers that came at 5 pm received the payment of a days wages. Those who had worked all 12 hours received the same for that is what they agreed on.
Now they see the others get rewards equal to them, they complain.
God is the land owner, and He will reward His laborers as He sees fit. Not as men reward but the Lord rewards according to His grace.
Never will He cheat anyone in His employment. We are not to complain if God is generous.
The system of the law is easy to figure out. You get what you deserve. The system of grace is foreign to us, God deals with us according to who He is, not according to who we are.
Without Christ, we would not know grace. We would suffer the penalty for sin.
Christ paid that debt in full. All our service is already due to Him. To serve God is a gift.
In all we do for Christ, grace should be manifested in our service. Amen.
