3. And,
behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth.
4. And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?
5. For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?
Matthew 9:3-6
Jesus has returned from casting out the demons from the man in Gerasenes. When He came into His city, the people brought Him a paralyzed man. Jesus says, Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.
Being brought to Jesus for a physical healing no one but Jesus saw the the man's need of a spiritual healing. And this is what Christ deals with first. This is the first opposition to Christ we see in the word, and it occurs over and over in the Gospels.
Christ being slandered as a blasphemer, asked which is easier to say your sins are forgiven or arise and walk.
Jesus has the power to forgive sin and to prove it, He tells the paralyzed man, pick up your bed and go to your house. The proof of Christ's power was in the man getting up and walking to his house with his bed. And truly his sins were forgiven. Sin is in everyone even sick folk. Amen.
