1. Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
Matthew 4:1-3
There is great wisdom in these 3 verses.
Jesus has come from His baptism, which identified Him with sinners. Now He is tested by Satan, which identified Him as human and tempted Him as one.
Satan knew exactly who Christ was. But tests Him to see if He will use His power to satisfy His human need for food. If Christ had submitted to this, He would have submitted on the cross, and we would be without a Savior.
Christ remains in His human form and uses the word of God to defend against the devil. He taught us that this weapon can be used by us when we are alone. He used the word of God because He knew its effectiveness because He understood it and defended His Sonship. Defeating temptation.
We have this weapon available to us. Those who are ignorant of God's truth in His word are poorly armed in the battle against temptation. Amen.
