13. Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14. But John forbade him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?15. And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he suffered him.Matthew 3:13-15 Matthew 3 speaks of John's baptism of repentance. Repent is the first word in John's gospel, the first word in Christ's gospel, the first word in the disciples gospel, in Paul's gospel, and should be in every Christian sermon. Without repentance, baptism is just a bath, having no spiritual meaning. After John's baptism, the people begin to confess their sins before God. Up until this time, the Jews believed the Messiah would come and destroy the enemies of Israel for their wickedness. They did see themselves as sinners. John's warning is to flee the wrath of God. This word implies immediate action, swift, and straight, with no detours. The wrath of God is deserved. it's fair, it is ignored because it has not come immediately. John tells Jesus that He should baptism him. Jesus says, permit this for now. This is so Christ is identified with sinful man. At His baptism, He confessed the sins of the world as His own and repented of all before the Almighty, Christ being sinless. The witness to this is the voice of the Almighty speaking from heaven that He was pleased with Jesus His Son.Amen.
