1. And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
2. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
Revelation 21:1-2
Revelation 21 begins with new heavens, new earth with no sea, and a new Jerusalem. All things have been made new, new in character, fresh. This is not a remake of the old, but as in Genesis, when creation started, the Hebrew word bara is used, meaning made from nothing. This is the word in creating (bara) new heavens and earth, made from nothing by God.
The new Jerusalem comes down from heaven. No man could do such a thing. John says the city is as beautiful as a bride, coming down the aisle to meet her husband. God's presence is now forever with His people.
This Jerusalem is distinguished by what it does not have. No tears, sorrow, death, or pain. It will have no temple, sacrifice, sun, moon, darkness, sin, or abomination.
He who sits on the throne says, Behold, I make all things new. This is God's plan coming to completion. Redeemed man is greater than an innocent man. We gain more in Jesus than we ever lost in Adam.
Christ gives an invitation and a warning. He that overcomes shall inherit every blessing promised by Christ.
The later part of chapter 21 is the description of Jerusalem, its beauty, its measurements, and its purity because sin and death have been cast into the lake of fire. Amen.
