21. This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.
22. It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
23. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
24. The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
25. The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
Lamentations 3:21-25
Jeremiah is the voice of all afflicted in Jerusalem. Having ignored him when he spoke about God's judgment coming.
Yet something appears in the middle of all the suffering. And it is hope.
We went our own ways and had to experience those things that turned us back to God.
That eternal hope is Christ the Lord.
As defeated as the Lord's people were, Jeremiah saw hope in the promise of restoration.
God's mercy is without measure, and though there was destruction in punishment, God saved a remnant.
There is comfort in God's compassion. We are not destroyed in sin. Because God's mercy is new every morning.
Because Christ is the faithful servant, we have hope eternal.
This Jeremiah ponders, and declares God is his portion. Jeremiah found peace, and satisfaction in the Lord. And this is what we learn, that whatever we seek from God, is greater than anything the world can offer.
Spurgeon has a note on the soul who waits and seeks God.
Do not be in a hurry; do not expect to be delivered out of your trouble the first time you cry out unto God. God is good to those who seek and wait for the salvation of God. Amen.
