Lascaux Cave Lascaux Cave is a Paleolithic cave located in southwestern France, near the village of Montignac in the Dordogne region, where some of the most famous examples of prehistoric cave art have been found. Nearly 600 paintings (most of them of animals) adorn the interior of the cave walls in stunning compositions. Horses are the most numerous images, but deer, aurochs, wild goats, bison and even some felines also feature prominently. In addition to the paintings, which depict most of the main images, there are also nearly 1,400 similar engravings.
