3. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4. And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
5. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
6. For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.
7. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
2 Timothy 4:3-7
This is Paul's last testimony to Timothy. Paul had been in the ministry of the Gospel for over 30 years. Faithful to Christ the Lord. Even in the hardest of trials. Trials are a test of faith, patience, and strength.
Paul's advice to Timothy, preach the word, when it is easy and when it is hard.
Timothy was not to preach the word in theory, but in truth, and let God do the work. For only Christ can redeem a soul that is lost.
Paul warns that Timothy will meet with strong resistance from those who are bound by their sin. Refusing salvation they will surround themselves with evil.
Paul said, do the work of an evangelist even if that was not his gift.
Paul's testimony is he fought the war against evil. He preached the Gospel message. He ran the race till the very end. He knew where he was going, confident that he would be with Christ. Amen.
