Mine have the run of most of the house and the backyard. If you chain or lock them outside day and night you are abusing the animal.

I agree with you if the dog is your pet but many farmers and ranchers have working dogs that spend all their time guarding flocks or working cattle, these dogs are well taken care of but they are working dogs.
