1. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
2. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
3. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
4. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
Psalm 51:1-5
The prayer of men who know they have sinned and understand they can not justify themselves. Say in a heart-felt plea, have mercy on me, O God.
Trusting in all of God's mercy. Trusting in every bit of God's love and kindness.
A man's sins are his own. And he has no power to remove the punishment. Yet through Christ's blood and repentance, there is forgiveness.
Transgressions are a crossing of God's boundaries. Iniquity is a twisting or a perversion of the law. Sin is a falling short or a missing of the mark, set by God. Only Christ can save, for there is no other sacrifice approved by God. Here, the psalmist proves his knowledge of the Savior.
For he owns his sins and all the evil he has done and with confession asks for pardon. He asks the Savior whom he sinned against the righteous judge who is sinless and just. We learn this lesson when we fall Christ is able to restore.
So we ask, hide thy face from my sins, blot out my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God the Lord. Amen.
