For years, they’ve denied the existence of climate change, and now, in the face of overwhelming destruction, they’re turning a humanitarian crisis into a political tool. Just a few months ago, Donald Trump even joked that climate change might be a good thing because places like North Carolina would get ‘more waterfront properties’—a statement so disconnected from reality, it’s enraging. These same Republicans who consistently vote against FEMA funding are now trying to claim the Biden administration is to blame for an inadequate response. It’s absurd and un-American. We know what’s really happening here—FEMA and local agencies are on the ground in full force, as residents have pointed out, working visibly and vigorously to help affected communities. Thousands of personnel are providing millions of meals, water, and other essential supplies to aid recovery. The false claims that FEMA’s resources were diverted to other efforts, such as aiding immigrants, are outright lies. Republicans understand that the scale of the devastation is unprecedented, and they know this means recovery efforts will be challenging. Instead of focusing on helping, they’ve weaponized this disaster for political gain. It’s shameful that some are using this opportunity to spread misinformation and stir division rather than offer solutions. North Carolinians are facing the consequences of years of climate denial, compounded by political games that prioritize power over people’s lives. Leaders who dismissed scientific evidence cannot now pretend they care about our suffering. We need to reject these disinformation campaigns. North Carolina’s devastation isn’t just a talking point—it’s a harsh reality for thousands trying to rebuild their lives. It’s dangerous and dishonest for Republicans to use this tragedy as a campaign tactic.
