A statue of Queen Zenobia from the 3rd century CE sits on a throne 100 meters from shore in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea near the ancient port city of Ugarit in Latakia, Syria, facing east towards Rome. She was historically regarded as "a thorn in the side of the Romans."
