1. Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.
2. O my soul, thou hast said unto the LORD, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee;
3. But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.
4. Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.
5. The LORD is the portion of my inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.
Psalm 16:1-5
The psalmist shows his confidence in God. How can you put your trust in times of trouble if you do not believe God exists and is in control of all things and situations.
He proclaims that the Lord was his master, from his very soul, the eternal part of his being.
His goodness was nothing apart from Christ. It could not give him right standing before God. Everything the psalmist had was a gift from God, and to have everything and not have Christ, it was worthless.
The psalmist delights in the people of God, and those who are in Christ will measure their relationship by their love for those who love the Savior.
Living for Christ is not easy it has costs and sacrifices. But the psalmist explains that those who follow false gods their lives will be filled with difficulty and perils.
The psalmist, being the youngest, could not expect an inheritance. He praised Christ as his inheritance, knowing it was sure and would last forever. The promises of Christ are sure. The promises of Christ will last into all of eternity. The promises of this world shall fail and perish.
It is wise to hold on to Christ. In Him is life eternal. Amen.
