4. Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
5. Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
6. Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
7. Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
8. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Paul's letter to the church at Corinth. He begins by telling all, if you had every spiritual gift of God but did not have love, it would be meaningless. The Bible KJV uses the word charity. The word in Greek is agape, the highest form of love. The love of God for mankind and mankind's love for God.
Agape is a choice, a deliberate striving for another's highest good, and is demonstrated through action. God set the standard for agape love in sending Jesus to die for us while we were still sinners.
Paul gives examples of how this love is set into action. This love without action will accomplish nothing.
When you read the verses, substitute Jesus in place of charity. You will have a very real description of Christ.
What we receive from God is not the measure of our maturity in Christ. It is our display of love like Christ loves. This kind of love when everything in this world is gone, this will remain for ever. Amen.
