Together in Christ: 'Caught in Their Own Trap' — Proverbs 12:13
Saturday, July 20, 2024
The wicked are trapped by their own words, but the godly escape such trouble.
— Proverbs 12:13 NLT
Key Thought...
The Bible's book of Proverbs warns us repeatedly to carefully choose the words we speak. [1] Jesus' half-brother, James, emphasizes a very similar point: We need to be "slow to speak and slow to get angry," because angry speech does not accomplish the work of God. [2] The Spirit's emphasis in today's proverb takes a slightly different twist on these truths. If you leave a sinful person alone long enough and let them keep talking, they may end up trapping themselves in their talk. They reveal their duplicity, dishonesty, and foolishly evil plans.
Godly people escape this self-made trap because they speak the truth in love, [3] they seek to build up those with whom they speak, not exalt themselves, [4] and they have their words controlled by the influence of the Holy Spirit and not their sinful fleshly nature. [5]
These insights from the Spirit are not only helpful, but they also reveal areas in my heart and speech that I need God's help to purify and transform!

TODAY'S PRAYER
Almighty God, tender Father, Creator, and Redeemer, please hear my heart's cry in this famous prayer of David:
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. [A]
I pray this in the name and authority of Jesus, my Savior. Amen.
[A] from Psalm 19:14.
