In the movie "The Blues Brothers" (1980), John Belushi vanished while filming a night scene. Dan Aykroyd searched and noticed a single house with its lights on. He approached the house, ready to explain who he was, the movie they were filming, and that they were looking for Belushi. However, before he could say anything, the homeowner looked at him, smiled, and said, "You're here for John Belushi, aren't you?" The homeowner then explained that Belushi had come into their house, asked for a glass of milk and a sandwich, and then fell asleep on their couch. Incidents like this led Aykroyd to endearingly call Belushi "America's Guest." During the shoot, Carrie Fisher got engaged to Dan Aykroyd after he saved her from choking by performing the Heimlich maneuver. Belushi earned the nickname "The Black Hole" because he went through hundreds of pairs of sunglasses during production, losing each pair after filming a scene.
Some performers struggled with lip-syncing to pre-recorded songs, a common practice in movie musicals. James Brown ended up singing his number live with a recorded backing, while his choir lip-synced. John Lee Hooker's performance of "Boom Boom" was recorded live at Chicago's Maxwell Street Market. Aretha Franklin's performance was compiled from numerous takes, using the parts where her lip-syncing matched the recording.
