30. I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; 31. And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down.32. Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction.33. Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:34. So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man.Proverb 24:30-34 This book of proverbs written by Solomon is a book of wisdom. Here it contains both a message for man in his work. And more importantly a message for the soul. The field and vineyard need constant care or there shall be no harvest. As with the spirit of man if it is not maintained it shall fall short of redemption. Like the thorns, thistles, and weeds, that grow on their own, the curse of the ground. The spirit with no protection, no order, no instruction, falls into sin, and is destroyed. The stone wall of the spirit of man is Christ and His Gospel. The wall is to keep out those who would enter, to destroy the harvest. The unregenerate man is lazy in the work of his soul. And is unable to distinguish the grace of God. The wisdom of Solomon reveals a little sleep, slumber and rest in the spiritual sence. And you will be taken over with spiritual poverty bringing sorrows with it. And your want of spiritual wisdom as if someone stole it from you while sleeping. It is our duty to feed our spirit and mind with God's word. And then obey it to the letter. Amen.
