Range setting for small animal control.
Personally, I would rather chase a squirrel away with a reminder in the hip pocket than kill, skin and cook the little bastards. Too much effort, for the meat available, and it uses up all your onions.
With the adjustable sight on the co2 pistol, I prefer to set the front sight very slightly lower than the horizontal line made by the two sights, usually suggested, to place the round into the area boxed by three sides of said gun sight alignment. The target is set about 20 yards/meters away. That's about the 'confident' range squirrels (and others if you must) will roam about with other mammals in the area.
After I get a read on the dispersion of the shot, with the gun fixed (screwball shot aerodynamics) I will tap and thread the last few inches of the barrel with 'rifling' from a loose-fitting tap, to measure any spin presented to the ball shot, to tighten up the result better to the sights.
This may also have been a secret from the Revolutionary war, developed from having to clean up rusted/crap rifles and re-boring the guns to get reliability out of the junk England sent them, giving the Americans better range and accuracy.
Dialed in, one can expect consistent pattern in the 8.5x11 paper targets, with plenty of room to find out where the shot can wander, to be corrected.
