A senior border official revealed that the number of undocumented immigrants arrested for illegally crossing the US-Mexico border fell on the 7th, indicating that the Biden administration's restrictive new measures have stopped some undocumented immigrants.
The anonymous official said that the Border Patrol arrested about 3,100 illegal border crossers on the 7th, about 20% less than in the previous few days. "It's too early to say that this is a definite trend, but I think it indicates that the policy has achieved results in the early stages."
With the presidential election approaching in November, immigration issues have become a top concern for the American people. Democratic President Biden, who is seeking re-election, will once again face Republican former President Trump, who has taken a tough stance on undocumented immigrants, in this year's general election.
When Biden took office in 2021, he promised to reverse many of Trump's restrictive immigration policies, but in the face of record numbers of undocumented immigrants at the border, Biden's position has become tougher.
Biden implemented a comprehensive policy on the 5th to suspend asylum applications when the number of undocumented immigrants illegally crossing the US-Mexico border reaches a certain level. However, this asylum restriction order is an exception for unaccompanied minors, people facing serious medical or security threats, and victims of human trafficking.
The new policy is designed to maximize the number of undocumented immigrants who are placed in "expedited removal," a fast-track deportation process. The official said that since the 5th, more than 2,000 people have been urgently transferred every day, more than double the previous number.
However, the American Civil Liberties Union vowed to sue and stop the measure, which is similar to the Trump-era restrictions on asylum for undocumented immigrants.
