Pakistan 🇵🇰
is home to Asia’s largest pink salt mine, an unknown treasure, also known as the gem salt. Few consumers know where it comes from.
The salt mine of Khewra, located between Islamabad and Lahore, the capital of Pakistan, was discovered by Alexander the Great during the Indian campaign when his sick horses licked the stones found there and healed. Salt extraction can be traced back to this discovery made by horses.
The base of the current salt mine, was made during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar II.
Khewra Salt Mine, also known as Mayo Salt Mine, is the most famous in the Salt Range, is approximately 1 km long and covers half of Pakistan’s annual salt demand with 385 thousand tonnes of product.
Himalayan salt, known for its pink and red color, is extracted from this mine, which consists of 99% pure salt. The Mayo salt mine is visited by more than 300,000 tourists annually who arrive thanks to a railroad line built in colonial times. The inside of the mine can be traveled both on foot and in wagons built to transport saline rocks.
The mine includes miniatures of famous Pakistani buildings made of salt glass. Inside the miniatures, which are made by placing lamps inside salt rocks through which light passes, are the famous Sultan Mosque in Lahore, Murree city, the Great Wall of China and there are also busts of important men.
In the tunnels with the rosy ceiling and walls, there are also clinical treatment centers, built with bricks made of salt.
Thousands flock to these tiny clinics each year to treat asthma, bronchitis, ear inflammation, dysnea, and allergies. Completely drug-free treatment processes are under the control of that country's Ministry of Mining and Health
