Katy Zappala (Member 62,356) spotted these Cirrocumulus lenticularis undulatus clouds over the Santa Barbara Channel in California, US as she looked out towards Santa Cruz Island. The bright fingers of lenticularis clouds would have hovered in place, forming downwind of the Santa Ynez mountain range like ripples downstream of rocks in a river. Look carefully, and you'll see ripples upon the ripples. These give the cloud classification its undulatus name and are likely caused by the shearing effect of higher crosswinds. The mountains giving rise to Katy’s clouds are hidden from view, some 5 miles (8 km) inland behind her.
