1. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
2. The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. 12. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
4. Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the LORD.
5. There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous.
Psalm 14:1-5
Here, the psalmist speaks of fools, men absent of morals, with no understanding of spiritual things, full of vile and impure thoughts and conversation. Desperately wicked, having no superior to whom they are accountable. Who denies the existence of God and continues to sin, and are corrupt and unrestrained.
The Lord looked down from heaven as He did on all flesh of the ungodly before the flood. To see if any did seek God, through Christ, where He is only to be found, with the assistance of the Spirit.
And seeing the truth in men that all had sinned and turned their backs on the Creator. All became filthy in sin and abominations.
There were men in power over God's people, who profited from them, as the Pharisees are said to devour widow's houses, without remorse, and sit down and eat as if they had done no iniquity.
These having some knowledge of God thrust their guilt out of their memory.
Christ is our righteousness and we need not fear men, Christ has paid our debt, and pardoned all who come to Him. His promise of life eternal is sure. The last verse of this psalm is, Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! And Christ is Savior of all men, and all nations, that call upon Him in truth. Amen.
