27. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:
28. For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
29. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
30. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
31. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
Luke 16:27-31
Christ has just been ridiculed by the Pharisees, for telling them they can not serve God and money.
So He tells them the parable of the rich man and the beggar Lazarus.
Having both died the rich man sees Lazarus in a place of comfort, after living a life of suffering, the rich man is in a place of torment, having lived a life of pleasure and excess.
The rich man calls out to Abraham to send Lazarus to comfort him, when in life he refused any comfort to Lazarus.
Abraham tells him, you are both getting the reward according to how you lived.
The rich man asks Abraham to send Lazarus to his brethren, this is a picture of unbelieving Jews and Gentiles, so they do not come to this place of torment.
Abraham says they have the Law and the prophets, that speak of Christ. The rich man knows his rebellious family, being like him, having no concern for God's word or direction. But if Lazarus came back from the dead they word repent.
Now these are the words of Christ, He says, Abraham tells them, if they will not seek Christ in God's word, and pay no attention to God's way, that one greater than Lazarus, Himself would rise from death, and still people will not repent.
Salvation is God's gift to sinners. It is best explained as giving life to a dead man. For if you had everything you wanted in life but end up in hell, you have lost a great deal.
The time is now, it is not wise to put off what needs to be done for your soul. For who has a promise of tomorrow or even their next breath. Choose Christ He will not fail you. Amen.
