2. And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.
3. And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?
4. And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;
5. And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?
6. And they could not answer him again to these things.
Luke 14:2-6
Christ is invited to the house of a Pharisee for a sabbath dinner.
The religious leaders are watching to see if they can find something He does to accuse Him.
Christ sees a man with the dropsy. In our day, we call this edema, which is an accumulation of excess fluids most common in legs and feet.
Christ, who knew why He was invited, asked them if it lawful to heal on the sabbath. And they would not answer Him.
Christ then heals the man and speaks to those murmuring in the room about what He had done.
Asking every one of them, which of them would not on the sabbath day, rescue their livestock, which had fallen in a pit.
There is no answer from these leaders, for they would have rescued any animal rather than suffer the loss. And here Christ just healed a suffering man.
They all would have been exposed, for the extent of the labor used to prepare the feast in the Pharisee's house, or saving their livestock.
The Lord Christ having eternal wisdom, justice, mercy, and humanity. No person could answer. Yet these same things they used to accuse Him before they murdered Him. Amen.
