While out for a nighttime bike ride in the snow, John Cassano (Member 44,798) spotted the Northern Lights over Kiruna, Sweden. This is right up in the middle of the Lapland region of Sweden, which is also the location of the Cloud Appreciation Society’s Sky Holiday in December. John was part of a field research group working on the Cold Air Outbreak Experiment in the Sub-Arctic Region (CAESAR). The scientists are in the area to study the clouds that develop when cold air moves south from the Arctic sea ice out over the Greenland and Norwegian Seas. Which means they must be about the only group to visit this prime aurora territory in search of clouds rather than Northern Lights.
