1. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy mercies blot out my transgressions.2. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.3. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin. is ever before me.4. Against thee, thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mayest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.5. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.Psalm 51:1-5 The lesson in this psalm is we are sinners, born in us, no one taught us, I lied when I was afraid of punishment as a child, no one taught me, I stole things I wanted, I could go on and on. It is God who we sin against nothing is hid from His eyes. And the sin will be ever with us till it is dealt with. The psalmist shows us that first, we must own up to it, ask God's forgiveness, and it will be blotted out of God's sight. When Christ was on the cross for the sins of men like me. He said at the last, tetelestai, which is Greek and is translated as it is finished. In New Testament times, this would be a receipt in businesses, meaning what was owed was paid in full. Also, in judicial terms, it means the sentence had been fully served. In military terms, it stated the battle had been won. When Jesus said this one word, He said He paid what we owed for our sins, He restored our separation from God. He also took the punishment required by the law, which was death. And the battle against Satan, and sin, and eternal death, He won. All because Jesus loves us with a love that has no end. Amen.
