Portland, Oregon: Before it Became a Third World Communist #Shithole
This stout and massive structure is the famous Forestry Building, built for the 1905 Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition in Portland. It was built of whole, unpeeled Douglas Fir trees. The photo is undated, but judging by the fashion worn by those posing for this image in front of this imposing building, we think it was created around the time of the exposition. If you look closely, you can see many are wearing commemorative lapel ribbons! The expo attracted around a million and a half visitors to Portland over four months, along with many investors and much acclaim to Oregon. None of the exposition's structures or the man-made lake they surrounded survive today.
The Forestry Building was lost to fire in 1964. It's original location was the intersection of NW 28th Ave and NW Upshur Street - which looks completely different today! To learn more about the 1905 centennial, visit Oregon Encyclopedia. Image: Oregon State Archives Collection.
