Roeland Gielen (Member 62,412) stood in Lermoos, Austria, in the shadow of Germany’s tallest mountain, Zugspitze, as two ethereal morning phenomena began to converge. In the blue above, atmospheric moisture had made a haze that rendered visible shadows carved by the jagged mountain peak in the morning sunlight. Though in fact parallel, these crepuscular rays (crepuscular means ‘occurring at dawn and dusk’) appeared to fan out as they shone upwards due to the effect of perspective. Down below in the valley, radiation fog had settled on the fields overnight to form a misty lake. As the Sun continued to rise, its crepuscular rays would level out and start to point downwards. The mountain’s shadow would retreat back across the valley, and the warming light would stir the air and lift the morning fog.
