A few years ago before I learnt how to read a map I went in search of Down Tor Ring Cairn and Stone Row. I got totally lost and ended up chest deep in in moor grass. A man on a horse came by so I asked if he knew of the long stone row and circle, He didn't. He did however tell me that he'd been riding this part of Dartmoor for many years, if a monument as large as the one I described was here, He'd know. I've searched for many antiquities over the years, and it never fails to amaze me how often I meet people who have no idea what stands sometimes quite literally, on their doorstep. Horses for scale.
