From a vantage point on a ski slope near Disentis in the Swiss Alps, Svenja Leonhard (Member 62,683) could spot three layers of clouds: one below, one above, and one way above. The lowest layer, which Svenja likened to ocean waves, are Stratus clouds. These likely formed when moist air blew over the cold surface of snow in the valley between the peaks. Above those peaks is a dark Stratocumulus cloud, and higher still is a thick blanket of Cirrostratus nebulosus – the species of the high ice-crystal layer cloud named for its lack of definite form. ‘When the sky looks like a painting,’ said Svenja, ‘you sit down and breathe.’
