Clouds in Art Week: ThursdayA new day dawns in the realm of Mount Fuji as travellers set off on a pink-tinged morning from the village of Isawa, Japan in this 1830s print by Katsushika Hokusai. Early morning fog surrounding the iconic volcano makes it appear like an island. Today, almost two hundred years later, Isawa has been transformed into a tourist mecca with winery tours, hot spring resorts, and bullet trains. But two things remain unchanged: the awe-inspiring silhouette of mighty Fuji-san and the occasional nightly visit by the ephemeral, ground-level Stratus cloud we call fog.Woodblock print Dawn at Isawa in Kai Province (c. 1830-32) from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji by Katsushika Hokusai, in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, New York, US.
