Clouds in Art Week: Wednesday
Nineteenth-century German artist Caspar David Friedrich specialised in stillness. His paintings often feature silhouetted figures lost in contemplation as they gaze out over misty vistas of the natural world. But there are no figures in Drifting Clouds, just the landscape and roaming patches of Stratus fractus clouds that can form as moist winds drift up mountain terrain. This time, you play the part of the contemplative figure, your mind drifting with the fragments of cloud as you lose yourself in the shrouded valleys beyond.
Drifting Clouds (c. 1820) by Caspar David Friedrich in the collection of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Germany.
