Most people don't know who they really are...
Who you really are is not what you see in the mirror. What you see in the mirror is your physical body, but it is not who you really are. Who you really are cannot be seen in the mirror, because it is immaterial.
Your physical body is just the house where the real you lives.
As such, it is in your best interest to get to know yourself before you focus on building close relationships with others. It is also for your own good not to waste yourself trying to form relationships with people who are superficial, who see only what is visible to the naked eye, who perceive only appearances, because they are unable or uninterested in looking in depth.
And I want you to understand me well: I'm not telling you not to pay any attention to relationships with others, I'm telling you to start by knowing yourself and having a deep connection with yourself.
The problem with most people, the reason why their lives bring them unpleasant experiences again and again, is that they have inner traumas that they are not aware of and that affect their lives. Most people don't understand that they are the reason their life looks the way it does, that something inside them makes their life look the way it does.
They have never gone inside themselves to see what traumas are there and deal with them, heal them. They live with a shallow understanding of the world, with shallow values and shallow interests.
They focus on the outside instead of focusing on the outside.
When you decide to look inside, you're not going to like what you see there, but you need to look at those things, recognize them as yours, and face them.
Otherwise you cannot heal.
The journey to self-knowledge requires being willing to deal with those things that need to be changed IN YOURSELF, to do your inner work.
The fact that you open your eyes and see those aspects within yourself and in your life that require some changes is not enough; you need to act.
First you see those things inside you that need to be dealt with, then you accept that they are aspects of you, you take them on and then you go to work, make the necessary changes.
And this is not a process that lasts for a limited period of time; the more you open your eyes, the more you discover within yourself that you need to work with. It is an ongoing process where you discover more of who you are, discover more layers of trauma/beliefs and limiting patterns to heal/clear from within.
A lot of people see all kinds of things that are "wrong" in others and keep trying to change others, but they don't see themselves.
You know you've woken up when instead of seeing what's "wrong" with others/pointing the finger at others, you see what's "wrong" with you and instead of trying to change others, you focus on changing yourself.
Nothing changes in your life (outside) until you change yourself (inside).
As such, it is necessary to have some absolutely honest conversations with yourself, admit that some things are wrong and stop doing them. If you don't have these conversations with yourself and make some changes, you're not solving anything.
You need to be able to look at yourself and admit :
"I have some problems and it's time to deal with them. I do some things that are not right, that do not honor me. I kept trying to convince myself that it's not a big deal, that everyone does it anyway, that it's the result of being hurt in the past, I made all kinds of excuses for myself, but deep down I know that what I'm doing is wrong, I know I'm not operating with integrity."
