‘You can’t have a great sunset without clouds,’ says Peter Baumbusch (Member 50,941), and we couldn’t agree more. And of all the ten main types of cloud, Altocumulus is probably the best at showing off a sunset. Peter spotted this one near Scottsdale, Arizona, US. When Altocumulus extends over much of the sky like this, a form known as stratiformis, and it has gaps between its cloudlets, which we describe as perlucidus, the cloud can play with the glancing light in dramatic and unpredictable ways. These keep sunset watchers like Peter looking up as the light plays out over those last precious minutes of the dying day.
