31. There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him.
32. And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee.
33. And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren?
34. And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!
35. For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.
Mark 3: 31-35
Jesus is teaching to a great number of people, the scribes have accused Jesus of casting out demons by the power of Satan, and He rebukes them.
His friends are concerned because of the vast number of people, He could not so much as sit down and eat.
And His family comes to bring Him to a safe place.
They can not get through the crowd, so the message is relayed to Him.
Saying your mother and brothers are looking for you.
This word brethren in Greek adelphoi meaning from the same womb, Jesus had four brothers and two sisters. Some religions believe Mary remained a virgin, but this clearly disputes that point, identifying these as coming from the same womb as Jesus.
But Jesus takes this point deeper, asking who is my mother or brothers, metaphor for who is close to me. And He answers those that do the will of God.
This is very clear. You can not be a bystander and reap God's reward. We have responsibilities to act in faith, not just hearing the word but living it every day. This brings a war in our nature against the flesh, do not let the flesh fool you, it is not going to heaven, it is going back to dust from which it came, and Jesus will give those who are faithful a body that will last for ever, never get sick, and will have no pain.
The reward comes with putting Christ first, and then, you shall have favor with God. Amen.
