33. And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,
34. They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.
35. And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.
36. And sitting down they watched him there;
37. And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Matthew 27:33-37
Jesus has been beaten spit on, and a crown of thorns jammed onto His head.
Now they make Him carry the cross beam to His execution, a place still visible today of a rock escarpment that resembles a skull.
They give Him a mixture of stale wine and gall, given mainly to give some pain relief. Crucifixion was a form of capital punishment invented by the Persians around 350 B.C. it is one of the most painful deaths ever invented by man.
Jesus refused the drink because the cost of our sin was expensive, His suffering and death could not be diminished.
The soldiers that crucified Christ divided His garments, but the outer tunic was woven in one seamless piece, no seams or stitches, making it of considerable value. This fulfilled the prophesy in Psalm 22:18.
The seamless tunic symbolized the unity and completeness of Jesus's sacrifice, having no divisions, Jesus's sacrifice was whole, and unbroken the only acceptable price for the sins of man.
Casting lots or gambling for the tunic, only one man would gain the prize.
And you can see some took this as a form of entertainment, and they murdered Him, putting the accusation over His head, which was the truth. He paid our debt for sin. Those who understand will live a different life.
Those who refuse, there is but one path, and it leads to destruction. Be wise choose life. Amen.
