1. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
2. Wash me thoroughly for mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
3. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
4. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightiest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
5. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Psalm 51:1-5
There are many lessons in this song. First, you can not hide your sin from God. The psalmist admits his sin, and seeks God's mercy and forgiveness.
God is not moved by men's merits nor by the misery sin brings to men. God's free grace by His will is how we obtain favor.
According to His tender mercies, which can not be measured.
The psalmist sin was very grievous and affected many others.
He seeks to have this and all his other sins blotted out of remembrance that they may not be held to his account.
The main lesson is that only God can forgive and pardon sin. It is against Him we sin, and in doing so, it affects others in harmful ways.
We must seek God in truth for we all sin, and we were taught by none it is in us. It is a daily battle against this world, and the destruction in it.
The psalmist learned from this, and in Psalm 119:11, he writes, Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Reading God's word brings us closer to Him. The closer we get, the easier it is to see we have victory over sin in Christ Jesus. Amen.
