1. At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?2. And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,3. And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 4. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.5. And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me. Matthew 18:1-5 Previous to the disciples question, Peter has caught a fish with a coin in its mouth and paid the temple tax for Jesus and himself. And James and John have seen Christ transfigured on the mountain. So speaking of Christ's kingdom that they thought would be established after His resurrection they want to know their position. Christ puts a child in the middle, who is humble and without pride, saying this kind of person would be the greatest, not being childish, but converted from the notion of a kingdom on earth, and seeking honor, wealth, and prosperity. Children do not think like this. So the lesson, unless they learn to be humble and maintain a modest opinion of themselves, not envious of each other, subdue the ambitious nature of being better than others. They shall not enter the true kingdom. And who ever shall receive one of His followers, who has this nature, it will be as if they are receiving Christ. So this lesson is easy to say, but very difficult to do, it takes the Spirit of God to live a life like Christ's, putting others before self. The blessings are here, yes, but the reward comes at the end. Amen.
