‘Above me are the Alps,
The palaces of Nature, whose vast walls
Have pinnacled in clouds their snowy scalps,
And throned Eternity in icy halls.’
From the narrative poem Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage (1816) by Lord Byron.
Altocumulus lenticularis, the species of Altocumulus normally characterised by its smooth, disc-like appearance, that has here been twisted and torn by the turbulent Alpine winds to form features known as asperitas, after the Latin for ‘roughness’. Spotted over Säntis, a mountain in north-eastern Switzerland, by Thomas Ulrich (Member 57,324).
