2. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.
3. But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;
4. How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priest?
5. Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?
6. But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.
Matthew 12:2-6
Jesus on the sabbath day is walking through a field of grain, and his disciples are hungry and ate some.
The Pharisees are quick to tell Him they are breaking the law of the sabbath day. The penalty is death by stoning.
Jesus asked have you read where David and his men ate the shewbread that was taken and replaced with fresh, it was only for the priests to eat,
1 Samuel 21:6. And continues about the law, how if they say the disciples are at fault, for their servile labor on the sabbath, how the priests, cut wood, make a fire, kill the sacrifice, flay the offering, setting it in order on the alter. Also the priests circumcise a male baby on his eighth day even if it is the sabbath.
So Christ, who created everything even the Sabbath Day, shows His authority, saying, if you are exempt because you're working in the temple, in this place is one greater than the temple. For Christ being Lord of all, is Lord of the sabbath day.
The Pharisees would have all to keep the letter of the law. Christ is more interested in showing mercy and grace, this is His love in deed not just words. Amen.
