5. I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.
6. I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with my own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.
7. Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favorable no more?
8. Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?
9. Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah.
Psalm 77:5-9
The psalmist looks back at how God treated His people. How at night when He praised God making a careful search in his heart of the cause of his troubles and what was the way of deliverance out of them.
He asks, will God cast me off? Will He stop being good to me?
Is His mercy used up? Will He break His promises?
Has it slipped God's mind what I am going through?
Is He so angry that He will no longer show mercy?
How many of us have similar questions?
It is in times of this sort that our focus must be on Christ.
When you look at Christ, do you feel cast off? When you see Him on the Cross does He seem unfavorable? Does He hanging there look like He ran out of mercy? As His life fades from Him, do you see Him fulfilling His promise? Could Christ be any more gracious? As He looks down on us, could He be any more loving? Could He show us any more mercy?
When we are troubled, stop, and look for Christ, remember who He is. The Son of God, our Savior, King, Healer, Shepherd, the Way, the Door, the Lamb of God, who washed us clean by His blood. His promise that He would always be with us, if your alone, troubled, scared, remember, He is not the one who left. Run back in to His open arms. Amen.
