You can think of a Cumulonimbus calvus as the brooding teenager of the storm world. Though it is more developed and more volatile than its younger self, the shower-bearing tall form of Cumulus cloud known as Cumulus congestus, this cloud has yet to reach its ultimate potential as the powerfully mature storm cloud known as Cumulonimbus capillatus. Like any strapping teen, however, it can pack a punch, sometimes producing quite heavy rain showers, blustery winds, and even a bit of lightning. Mic Clayton (Cloud Appreciation Society Member 43,412) spotted this Cumulonimbus calvus from a distance in Binjura, New South Wales, Australia. The setting Sun dyed its hair yellow and cast an orange glow below. And there, among the raindrops it threw to the ground, appeared a fragment of rainbow. Even the moodiest of teenagers can surprise you sometimes.
